Do you work on a 1099? RobDavisPE.com

ROB DAVIS, P.E.

Q47: Do you work on a 1099?

The short answer is, at this time of my life, I prefer "W-2" relationships.

The long answer is...

As to my tax status with your firm, I see many possibilities. I'm incorporated, so I could work as a "consultant" through my own company... that would be "on a 1099", also known as "on a Corp-to-Corp basis". Or, alternatively, I could be an "employee" of your company on a W-2. However, at this time of my life, I prefer W-2 relationships.

Working on a 1099 would cost me more. There was a time in my life when I worked "on a Corp-to-Corp basis". However, the additional "Corp-to-Corp" paperwork used to use up pretty much all of my free time. These days I'm aware that rest and recreation (R&R) is a NEED, therefore these days I give preference to W-2 relationships.

Working on a 1099 would be riskier for me: There are some smaller, less experienced contract service firms and their recruiters who erroneously believe they should pay me less on a 1099. Actually, 1099 rates should be greater, not smaller! Why? Because if I take additional risks, I should get a higher rate of compensation! Additional risks? Yes! When I work on a 1099, I take the additional risk of never being able to collect my wages! These days, when I work on a W-2, I don't have to take that risk any more.
